Schizophrenic
Joachim doesn't just fight alongside Yuri as Joachim--he periodically changes into alternate forms depending on his "Joachythms," a biorhythmic chart that determines if he becomes the Golden Bat, Invisible or Grand Papillon/Great Question. There are also items that automatically change him into each form, and equippable accessories that increase his likelihood of changing into each form.
Golden Bat
The Golden Bat is Joachim's vampiric side, and the first form we see him as in the series. For a vampire bat the Golden Bat is actually fairly benign, and has no desire to drink the blood of his comrades, only choosing to attack his enemies. As Golden Bat he has incredibly strong attack power, but much lower hit points, and he loses the ability to use magic or his Muscle Arts.
Joachim changes into the Golden Bat when the gold line on the Joachythms chart goes over the crosshairs. With Bat's Gold he can automatically become Golden Bat, and he can increase the frequency of this transformation by wearing the Gold Band. |

Invisible
Invisible is, as you could guess from the name, invisible. Naturally, when he is in this form his evasion goes way up, making him much harder to hit--because you can't see him, a fact Invisible will repeat to you using clever puns, again and again (see the "Joachisms" section).
Joachim takes the form of Invisible whenever the rainbow line on the Joachythms chart crosses the lines. Using Strongoids he can become Invisible automatically, and can become Invisible more often by equipping the Prism Band. |

Grand Papillon
Grand Papillon is Joachim's strongest transformation for most of the game--all of his stats go way up in this form. The butterfly mask he uses as a "disguise" is actually a butterfly barrette belonging to Yuma, the little orphan girl who found Joachim washed up on the shore in Le Havre. Grand Papillon is a very cheesy "superhero," and talks a lot like the Tick. But he is committed to truth and justice.
If the rainbow line and the golden line on the Joachythms chart cross each other at the right moment, Joachim turns into Grand Papillon. This will happen more often if he's wearing the Electro Band, but you can make it happen automatically by using a (very rare) item called Getitup!. |

Great Question
Toward the end of the game, to prove his manliness and strength before confronting their final foe, Joachim asks Great Gama if he can endure something called the "Man Festival." The Man Festival turns out to be 100 wrestling rings stacked one on top of the other, in which Joachim (and his friends who choose to help him) must defeat someone on each level, and finally defeat the ultimate foe at the top, Great Question.
Great Question is none other than Great Gama himself, but wearing a lurid mask with a violet question mark on it. By defeating Great Question here, and after going through a "baptism of men" (*cough*), Joachim takes the moniker of Great Question for himself.
Great Question is not only Joachim's strongest form, but the best physical attacker in the game. Great Question replaces Grand Papillon in Joachim's cycle of forms, so the same items that changed him into Grand Papillon now change him to Great Question. |
