About Snowe

This section contains spoilers for Suikoden IV.

First, the raw factoids:

Name: Snowe Vingerhut

Star of Destiny: Tenan (shared with Flik and Edge)

Age: 19

Weapon: Daddy Blade (becomes Snowe Blade)

Voiced by: Kishou Taniyama (Japanese), Paul Stephen (English)

Snowe Vingerhut is perhaps the most complex and interesting character in Gensou Suikoden IV, and also one of the hardest to like. From the beginning of the game--though he seems to have a good heart and good intentions--Snowe comes off as pompous and simultaneously in way over his head. He finds himself in a new world where neither his name nor his wealth have much meaning anymore, and where someone who has been his subordinate his whole life is now more competent and more popular than he is. What's a boy to do?

It seems there's not much Snowe can do. Well, not much he can do right. Snowe is one of those characters who, despite doing what he thinks is best in his given situation, always ends up on the wrong end of things. He is unique in that he brings most of this on himself, but underneath the poor decision-making, the jealousy, and the general ill will toward someone who was once his friend, Snowe isn't that bad a guy.

That sounds odd, but I do believe it.

Really, despite a lot of shortcomings, I consider Snowe to be a strong person. A lot of it may be pride getting in the way, but in Snowe's situation at the end of the game, in which he is basically a shell of his former self and should be very humbled, he still refuses to apologize for what he did. He realizes it was wrong, and probably feels bad about it, but he did what he had to do, no regrets, no apologies. For a long stretch of the game I disliked Snowe, but to see him broken down to nothing, and still have enough of a sense of dignity not to fall all over himself in apology to the Hero? I couldn't help but admire that.

Plus, he has great hair.

Snowe is also the "moral to the story" character of the game--Suikoden IV is all about the dichotomy of punishment and forgiveness. The Hero has the Rune of Punishment, but like some other True Runes it has a flip side, one that can only be harnessed if the bearer is worthy. And the way that the Hero proves himself worthy? By forgiving Snowe, the person who had deliberately wronged him at every turn in his recent life. And I figure, if the Hero can forgive him, so can the rest of us. So here's this fanlisting.

About this site

Like I said above, Snowe as a character demands forgiveness--from other characters and the people playing the game. "To Forgive" is a song by one of my favorite bands ever, the Smashing Pumpkins. Right now the site contains fanlisting elements only, but I hope to be adding a lot of fun Snowe extras soon. ^_^

The artwork used in the layout is by my good friend and self-proclaimed commission whore, Anne.
